Ledaig nennt sich der torfrauchige Single Malt der auf der Insel Mull beheimateten Tobermory Destillerie. Es wird Malz mit einem wesentlichen Torfrauchgehalt von etwa 35 bis 40 ppm (vergleichbar mit Lagavulin) verwendet.
Ledaig ist vom Stil her somit ein rauchiger Single Malt mit robust maritimem aber zugleich auch eher süsslichem Charakter.
Bei dieser Abfüllung hat uns speziell das perfekte Zusammenspiel des typischen Ledaig Torfcharakters mit den sauberen Sherrynoten der verwendeten Fässer überzeugt.
Um die Komplexität und Ausgewogenheit dieses Single Malts noch zu erhöhen, erfolgte die Reifung eines Teils des Fasses zeitweise in kleineren Octave Sherry Fässern. Konkret wurde nach 11 Jahren im Oloroso Sherry Hogshead die Hälfte aus dem Fass für ein Jahr in Palo Cortado Octaves umgefüllt und danach alles wieder zusammen nochmals für ein Jahr im originalen Fass ausgereift. Der Aufwand hat sich gelohnt!
An der Nase Barbecue Holzkohle, Kakao-Pulver, Filter-Kaffee und gesalzenes Karamel unterlegt mit sanften Motoröl-Gerüchen, etwas nasser Wolle und Schuhpolitur.
Am Gaumen Waldbeeren Kompot und geräucherter Speck gepaart mit leichter Gewürznote und Nuss, dann gewinnen wieder dunkle Schokolade die Oberhand. Ein schönes Zusammenspiel der süssen und schwereren Schokolade-Noten mit den leichteren trockeneren Sherry-Wein Noten. Der Rauch bleibt stets ein verlässlicher Begleiter.

Ledaig is the name of the peaty single malt of the Tobermory distillery located on the island of Mull. It uses malt with a substantial peat smoke content of about 35 to 40 ppm (comparable to Lagavulin).
Stylistically, Ledaig is a smoky single malt with a robust maritime, but also rather sweet character.
This single malt spent the first 11 years of its life in an oloroso sherry hogshead. To further increase its complexity and balance, half of the liquid was temporarily removed during the twelfth year and reracked into smaller palo cortado sherry octave casks. Both components were then combined again to marry for its final, thirteenth year in the original cask. The effort was worth it! The Palo Cortado added noticeable complexity and yet is perfectly integrated.
On the nose one finds barbecue charcoal, cocoa powder, filter coffee notes and salted caramel, underlaid with gentle motor oil smells, some wet wool and shoe polish.
On the palate, we find wild berry compote and smoked bacon paired with light spice and nuttiness, before dark chocolate takes over. It is a nice interplay of the sweeter and heavier chocolate notes with the lighter drier sherry wine notes. The smoke always remains a reliable companion.
The finish is decently long for a modern teenage whisky and balanced between sweetness and smoke.
This is an approachable peat smoker for any occasion.
